The Story Behind the Design

On June 19, 1865, freedom finally arrived for over 250,000 African Americans — and this design honors that moment and the people who made it possible. The rings carry the names of those who led the way: Frederick Douglass, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Ida B. Wells, and more. At the center, the Black Power Fist stands for unity and strength. The colors tell the story: Black for resilience, Red for sacrifice, Yellow for justice, Green for hope.
